This is a fun way to budget for things you know you spend a lot of money, don't really know how much you spend, but you want to reduce your spending so you can save.
Example of something you want to spend less on: Going out to eat or fast food.
Take these 3 easy steps.
Step 1: Write going out to eat/fast food in the category section of the envelope.
Step 2: Set the amount you will spend on this category between this payday and the day you get paid again.
Step 3: Get the cash out of the bank, put it in the envelope and write the amount on the back of the envelope.
Now each time you want to go out to eat or get fast food ONLY spend from this envelope. Do not put any more than the amount you set until you get paid again.
The goal is to set a limit of how you will spend, for a defined period of time and do go over.
You can do this for other categories as well. For me it was for my favorite coffee. This allows you to still enjoy the things you like but don't overdo it and ensure it stays within your budgeted amount for it.
You can have an envelope for more than one category that you to get a handle on.
